Last Sunday was a special day in our family, Avery was baptized. This was something that had been in the works for quite a while. I was honored enough to be with Avery when he accepted Christ and was able to lead him in the prayer of salvation. I knew that he was sincere in his devotion to Christ and was sure that he completely understood the decision that he was making.
There are a few scattered Sundays each year that those requesting baptism have the opportunity to be baptized by the lead pastor at our church. Although we love all of our campus pastors (we honestly do), we really wanted Avery to be baptized by Dr. Young if at all possible. He is a wonderful leader, a scholar of the Bible, a former President of the Southern Baptist Convention, a celebrated author, he has a heart of children and teens, and above all – he is personable. In the times that we have been around him and his beautiful wife, Jo Beth, we have felt completely at ease. We just … if we could … really wanted Avery to be baptized by this man that we respect so much. I’m sure that baptism by any other minister “would stick” just as well, but having Dr. Young do it even made the day even more special to our family.
I’ve always loved the invitation that is give on the special baptism days. They have an extended alter call that is so reverent and peaceful. It’s so easy to be in prayer for every person that goes forth. The ministry leaders do a great job of creating an atmosphere that is conducive to decision-making. Not to mention that it’s so exciting to see so many come forward to join the church and to be baptized.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how well organized the baptism service was. There were so many volunteers! I can’t put into words how impressed I was with how smooth everything went. And, as is the trend at Second Baptist, the attention given to making the baptism experience top-notch was just amazing. I had always pictured needing to be with my child from start to finish to make sure that all was well, but instead I was able to view Avery’s baptism (video and take photos) and enjoy this moment that I’m sure not to forget.
I’m so grateful to the children’s ministry leaders at Second Baptist and at Sugar Creek. They have had a tremendous influence on Avery. Seeing your child accept Christ and be baptized is a very special time. Seeing Avery smiling the entire time made my heart nearly explode.
