For a long time, I’ve considered writing about being a Dance Mom. I’ve danced my entire life, so it would be a natural subject for me to pursue. However, now that we have entered the world of competitive dance (or Company, as our studio refers to it) – I think the time has come.

Since the onset of the show Dance Moms on Lifetime, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about what it’s really like. Some people have asked out of curiosity and some because they have a daughter that might want to pursue dance/Company one day.

Let me start by saying that I love our studio and our teachers. You won’t be reading any trash talk. I’m going write only about our experience as a family – how we balance school and long studio hours, what it’s like to learn and practice choreography at home when you are 6 years old, competition atmosphere and etiquette, prepping for Nationals, the overall juice of what it’s like … and finally, after much thought and consideration, the money aspect of it. [I really debated about whether to talk about the cost. It’s a lot and truthfully, I’m not crazy about spilling my financial obligations online. But, it is a HUGE part of the commitment, so I’m gonna do it.]

Now … is there anything that you want to know? Any topics that you are curious about?

If you are a current Dance Mom – I’d love to have you comment. It’s interesting to me how things are different across the country and from studio to studio. If you have something that you’d like to talk about in community (that’s a fancy word for “all together”) – let’s do it! Leave me a comment.
